Dopo gli assaggi e la valutazione complessiva dell’ultima annata del Brunello, eccoci all’analisi della Riserva, che quest’anno proponeva in degustazione (e tra poco sul mercato) la versione 2016, da molti – e probabilmente a ragione – considerata la migliore dall’inizio del millennio. Vendemmia unanimemente considerata a cinque stelle (e qualora ci fosse stata la possibilità di assegnare la lode, sono certo sarebbe stato questo il caso), piovosa e fredda in primavera e poi caratterizzata da un’estate ricca di sbalzi termici e qualche precipitazione a “raffreddare i bollenti spiriti”, e terminata con un settembre praticamente perfetto, con giornate assolate e notti fresche, che hanno quindi permesso praticamente a tutti di raccogliere le uve nel perfetto stato di maturazione, sia in termini di concentrazione zuccherina che – soprattutto – di componenti polifenoliche.   After the tastings and the overall evaluation of Brunello new vintage, here we are at the analysis of the Riserva, which this year offered 2016 version for tasting (and soon on the market), considered by many – and probably rightly – to be the best from the beginning of the millennium. An harvest unanimously considered as five-star (and if there had been the possibility of assigning another, I am sure this would have been the case), rainy and cold in spring and then characterized by a summer full of temperature changes and some precipitation to avoid early ripening, so ended with a practically perfect September, with sunny days and cool nights, which therefore allowed practically everyone to bring the grapes to perfect ripeness, both in terms of sugar concentration and - above all - of polyphenolic components. Quando fu presentata (febbraio 2018) all’annata 2017 a Montalcino furono assegnate quattro stelle su cinque, e gran parte degli addetti ai lavori pensarono che il giudizio fosse stato di manica larga. Infatti, al di là della valutazione del Consorzio (che da buon oste tende a sostenere che il proprio vino sia sempre ottimo e che da quest’anno è stata “posticipata” di dodici se non addirittura ventiquattro mesi), la 2017 fu davvero un’annata difficile, iniziata con un inverno ed una primavera parecchio siccitosa, a cui fece seguito un’estate calda se non addirittura arida. Il tutto – seppur mitigato da alcune piogge nella prima metà di settembre – si tradusse in una vendemmia anticipata oltre che caratterizzata da rese inferiori fino al 30% rispetto alla “perfetta” 2016, per di più con il potenziale rischio di maturazione fenoliche incomplete.   When it was presented (February 2018), Brunello’s 2017 vintage were awarded with four stars, and most of the insiders thought that the judgment had been wide-ranging. In fact, beyond the evaluation of the Consortium, 2017 was truly a difficult vintage, which began with a very dry winter and spring, which was followed by a hot summer. All this - albeit mitigated by any rains in the first half of September - resulted in an early harvest as well as featured by yields up to 30% lower than the “perfect” 2016, moreover with the potential risk of incomplete phenolic ripening.
